On 9th May 2025, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released its much-awaited recommendations to the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) on how spectrum (radio frequencies used for communication) should be assigned to companies offering satellite-based internet, voice, and data services in India.
These recommendations are aimed at supporting India’s vision to expand high-speed connectivity, especially to rural and remote areas, using satellite communication technologies.
Key Recommendations:
Specific frequency bands suggested for different types of satellite services
Spectrum to be assigned for 5 years, extendable by 2 more years
Companies must coordinate with each other to avoid signal issues
The government to assign spectrum within 30 days of the application
Possible subsidy support for satellite internet in rural and remote areas
New pricing method based on a company’s revenue and user base in cities
These steps can boost satellite broadband, improve rural connectivity, and support India’s Digital India goals.
