TRAI mandates implementation of 160-numbering series for service and transactional calls

Recently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released directions dated 04th May 2024 (attached). In these directions, it is highlighted that with the rise in spam calls and the Access providers not developing a structured ecosystem which can curb the issue of these fraudulent calls. The authority has urged the Access Providers to implement the dedicated ‘160xx’ numbering series for service and transactional calls on their respective DLT platforms.

The implementation process has been divided into two phases:

  1. The service providers need to submit an implementation plan for the implementation of this new numbering series as per the DoT regulations within 30 days from the issue of this direction.

  2. And then implement that plan (for all of its Telemarketers/ Principal Entities) on their respective DLT platform within 90 days from the issue of this direction.

In regard to these directions by TRAI, DoT has also released a notification dated 28th May 2024 (attached) regarding numbering series allocation by DoT which defines the numbering series pattern that will have to be taken by the Government and Regulators (1600xxxxxx) and the Financial Entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA and IRDA (1601xxxxxx).
