On April 25, 2025, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) held a meeting of the Joint Committee of Regulators (JCoR) with key bodies like RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, Meity, and others to tackle growing concerns around spam calls, fake messages, and digital frauds.
Here’s what was discussed:
The committee discussed how to implement 1600 series numbers for government and financial sector calls, aiming for quick rollout and regular monitoring.
Encouraging businesses to use the Digital Consent Acquisition (DCA) platform to take user consent before sending messages
Taking stronger action against fraudulent headers, fake SMSs, and misuse of mobile numbers
Working on ways to handle spam on OTT and RCS apps (like messaging apps)
A great example of multiple regulators coming together to protect consumers and make digital communication safer and more reliable.
